Moses Leavitt

Moses Leavitt 2nd generationMoses was born the 2nd Son of John (deacon) Leavitt and Sarah Gilman, in Hingham, Plymouth MA on 12 August 1650. He spent his younger years in Hingham, but he appeared in town record in Exeter in 1664, when he was 14 years of age. It is assumed that his father John may have sent him there or he wanted to record a homesteam there. In those days very young sons could be recorded as taking a homestead share, agreeing that they would settle there when they became of age which was 21 years old.

Moses was a surveyor and became a very prominent man in Exeter, NH. He was a Selectman of Exeter and a Deacon of the First Church of Exeter. He served in the British Army during the French and Indian Wars.

He was married to Dorothy Dudley on 26 Oct 1681 in Exeter MA. They had 12 children, 7 boys and 5 girls. Most of their children remained in Exeter their whole lives.

Moses died on 17 June 1730 at they age of 80 years old.
